Thaddeus M. Jones has served as State representative in the 29th District since 2011. Representative Jones is committed to providing employment opportunities for all Illinoisans, making our streets safer, providing opportunities for our children to receive a world class education and to fight to ensure that underserved communities do not get left behind.
Jones has demonstrated his commitment to education by ensuring our community’s school receive more funding, working to change the way we fund education in order to treat all of our children equally, fighting to protect our teachers, and working closely with our local community college district, to improve educational opportunities. He has worked to pass legislation that provides property tax relief for our senior citizens.
Jones made history in 1997 when he became the first African-American to become alderman in Calumet City’s third ward.
In addition to his work on behalf of constituents in Springfield, Jones created the Jones Foundation in 1998 to benefit local children and their families. The foundation has provided educational opportunities for children in our community, provided meals for our neighbors, and provide counseling programs for individuals affected by domestic violence and HIV/AIDS.
In Springfield, he supported legislation in 2013 to expand healthcare coverage 342,000 low income Illinois residents.
A champion for making the Southland a better place to work and do business, Jones also worked with his colleagues in the General Assembly to urge the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning’s policy commission to approve construction of the Illiana Expressway, which would connect Interstate 55 and Interstate 65 to relieve congestion. He also has worked with South Suburban mayors to push for the creation of the Metra Southeast Service Line, which would help spur economic develop and create jobs in our community.
Jones has previously served as president of the Thornton Township Young Democrats, student trustee of South Suburban College, and as a member of the Calumet Cit Library Board. He is currently honorary chairman of the Thornton County Young Democrats.
A graduate of Bloom Trail High School, Jones received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Loyola University, and is currently working towards his Juris Doctorate at Loyola University School of Law.
Jones is the proud father of two sons, and lives with his wife Saprina in Calumet City.
